As part of a new theater construction phase over 50 years ago, cultural buildings were created that today largely have to be modernized. Dealing with existing architecture, monument protection and new requirements for stage, building and air-conditioning technology is a challenge that demands innovative concepts.
The design created by CROSS Architecture for the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe as part of a competition deals in particular with the theme of “theater for all”. The theater is understood here as a publicly accessible, approachable place that is integrated into the cityscape. The aim is to develop the Staatstheater in Karlsruhe into a cultural center that is open all day. Careful interventions in the existing building by architect Helmut Bätzner and the precisely positioned extension will create a new theater ensemble.
Bätzner's idea of designing the auditorium and stage as a “core” surrounded by shells with additional functions was taken up and developed further by CROSS Architecture. The extension areas with a new theater are placed like a further layer around the existing structure. The stages, rehearsal stages and workshops are positioned in this shellin such a way that generous views from the city into the interior of the theater are possible - for maximum openness.
A profiled glass façade made of different qualities of glass - clear, frosted, translucent - creates a playful approach to direct views, shadowy allusions and hidden details. The design for the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe subtly arouses curiosity in its audience.
CROSS also generously extended the existing foyer areas, creating further contact areas between the public and the theater. On the theater forecourt, the “Stadtbühne” (city stage) is planned as an outdoor theater that plays on the public space and offers a new event area.
