What does a contemporary company headquarters have to achieve? The design of a new company building always requires in-depth consideration of the respective clients and their needs. With the design for the new BSR headquarters, the CROSS Architecture team developed precise architectural answers for an identity-creating architecture.
In a prominent location on the corner of Wilhelm-Kabus-Straße and Ella-Barowsky-Straße near Südkreuz station in Berlin Schöneberg, Berliner Stadtreinigung (BSR) is planning two new buildings on a plot of around 12,000 square meters. The program includes the new BSR headquarters and a second building with office and retail space. In addition, a spot will be created where visitors can experience the circular economy, zero waste and sustainability.
The design by CROSS Architecture includes two buildings that form the urban prelude to the entire quarter. The northern structure, which has a 5-cornered floor plan, will be the new home of Berlin's city cleaning service. The southern structure with a high-rise building in a prominent urban location will accommodate the additional areas. A diagonal connection is created between the two buildings as an informal route into the quarter.
The 5-cornered timber hybrid building architecturally addresses the themes of circulation and community. As a closed figure with an open space in the center, stepped landscapes with platforms are created inside, which enable direct visual relationships and informal meetings. Exchange and communication are encouraged in the so-called “flex space”. A green terrace area is docked onto each level. This interlocking of indoor and outdoor space creates a diverse and rich microcosm at the heart of the BSR.
The high-rise building is located directly next to the head office. The clear and concise structure is divided by landings and terraces and, in addition to the high flexibility of the floorplans, offers a variety of outdoor spaces for the users.
“Our design goal was to create an identity-forming microcosm and a piece of home for the 6,000 BSR employees in a prominent urban location that is surrounded on all sides by traffic and noise.”
