The requirements for office buildings have undergone a radical transformation. Instead of being purely workplaces, they are buildings that are designed to be as flexible as possible to offer spaces where people can meet, exchange ideas and network. They provide opportunities to promote creative collaboration. At the same time, the office of tomorrow still needs spaces for focused work.

In the context of a competition for EnBW, one of Germany’s largest energy companies, the CROSS claim was: It’s all about people. The needs of the employees were the focus when developing a forward-looking working world. The goal? A new office building for 1,500 workplaces that offers innovative forms of an open working environment. Flexibility, sustainability and well-being were the key objectives in the design process. The intense dialogue on an equal footing between CROSS Architecture, Greenbox Landschaftsarchitekten and ARUP Engineers resulted in an innovative building that addresses Future Work in all its facets. This design was awarded the first prize.

The large building volume is clearly structured: a two-storey, set-back podium forms the base. Here, a prestigious entrance leads to publicly accessible areas such as a restaurant, coffee bar, mobility hub, parcel station, bike repair and library. The entire neighbourhood is welcome — this urban concept is the basis for social networking. This allows urban, social and entrepreneurial opportunities to emerge.

Above the podium zone hovers a four-storey, cantilevered structure. Open communal areas as well as focused workspaces are located here. Clearly set back from this, a loft floor forms the architectural conclusion. Floating ceiling slabs of the upper floors characterise the architecture and give the imposing building an elegant appearance.

An integral part of this working environment is the cascading stepped Pocket Park. Visible from all sides, this park offers a green landscape embedded in the office building. Employees can step out into the garden from every floor. This design creates a high-quality of stay and a healthy microclimate — crucial benefits that positively impact well-being.
