Every region has its own architectural culture and building style that contributes to its identity. New buildings play a crucial role in restoring urban structures. This is achieved through volumes, materials, colours or a deliberate use of contrast.

With the CROSS House, CROSS Architecture designed a residential building with two residential units and an office on the groundfloor on a 100-square metre plot in Haarlem’s historic centre. It fills a gap in the urban structure of the De Kamp neighbourhood. Bordered by the historical 18th-century Hofje van Guurtje Buret from the 18th century and a 20th-century housing project, the design restores the architectural balance that once characterised this small plot.

Like its surroundings, the new building tells a story: the façade and roof are completely clad in bricks, creating a monolithic appearance that harmoniously blends into the surrounding architecture. The façade facing Essenstraat shows a division between the lower and upper floors, emphasisedby the use of graphite-black windows in three different sizes. While the flats on the upper floor are accessible through recessed, wood-panelled entrances, the office is accessed via a generously open corner.

Integrating planting systems, such as the vertical garden on the southwest façade, provides natural cooling for the building and increases biodiversity.

The use of circular timber frame construction elements makes it possible to build the block of flats efficiently and to a high standard. The CROSS House complies with the latest BENG (AlmostEnergy-Neutral Buildings) requirements in the Netherlands. Both the flats and the office are heated and cooled using geothermal heat pumps.
