What does new learning mean in the context of a lecture hall building? This question found an answer in the new building for the expansion of Osnabrück University. The building combines seminar rooms and lecture halls in a compact and economical structure with an open learning environment.
The iconic building, raised by a slanted section on the underside of its volume, serves as a link between the cafeteria, library and green areas. The design is based on the idea that the architecture opens up passages and visual axes between these areas. The resulting decision is as simple as it is consistent: the undercut creates open perspectives as well as a covered forecourt, which is also an identity-forming meeting point.
Inside the building, this architectural decision creates an open space that, in the form of a stepped landscape, allows new possibilities for use. An artificial topography develops across various plateaus, serving as a spatial extension of the forum that creates a central place for communication and communal learning. As students move up the learning islands, their work becomes more focused. An innovative, unconventional and free learning concept that enables both communication and concentration.
“It was clear from the outset that Osnabrück University wanted to send a signal regarding innovation and identification with the new lecture hall building. The Sporer/Wens team proved to be the right partner. With a keen sense of the impact of architecture on the functions of knowledge exchange, joint learning and communication, they created a distinctive building that inspires not only the students. In our view, the building was quite rightly awarded the Lower Saxony BDA Prize 2015 by the Association of German Architects (Lower Saxony chapter) for its architectonic design.”
